As Seconds Swallow Centuries

As pine boughs dance
To airy streams
In the velvet of a November sky
Time slips the seams
Of fingers clasped
Against the current of a life
You cannot cup it to your lips
It’s already gone
Like the fading cry of the night train
Like the last echoes of summer
Whispering in autumn’s leaves

Midnight Mass, Two Rivers, Alaska
